I woke up with that Fine Young Cannibals song, She Drives Me Crazy playing in my head. Who knows why. Catchy tune. Came out 37 years ago. oof.
The wisest are the most annoyed at the loss of time.
~ Dante Alighieri
I’m by no means wise but I’m certainly annoyed. Why? Apart from all that loss of time shit, and just for starters, that ridiculous ex-chat show host for Fox just announced that Qatar will have an air force base in Idaho. All Qatar had to do to get it was bribe Bozo the Prez with a luxury Boeing 747 and let him build a golf course/beach resort in their country. He's such an easy mark.
I only mention it but the people of Qatar are almost exclusively Muslim. Islam is the official state religion of Qatar, and Sharia law is a main source of its legislation. Idaho is infamously Islamaphobic and a militia heaven. WHAT could possibly go wrong?
One of the strange things about adulthood is that you are your current self, but you are also all the selves you used to be, the ones you grew out of but can't ever quite get rid of.
~ John Green, The Anthropocene Reviewed: Essays on a Human-Centered Planet
This would explain why it’s so hard for me to lose weight, wouldn’t it? There’s so many of me in here – I'm a crowded house. On that note – I was weighed at both my doc appointments this week. Thursday’s scale results were a full seven pounds lighter than Wednesday’s VERY disappointing number. HOW can this be? Surely, I didn’t lose seven pounds overnight. If I did, can I do it again tonight? Please?
And then I felt sad because I realized that once people are broken in certain ways, they can't ever be fixed, and this is something nobody ever tells you when you are young and it never fails to surprise you as you grow older as you see the people in your life break one by one. You wonder when your turn is going to be, or if it's already happened.
~ Douglas Coupland, Life After God
Is this really so? I think being “broken” is different for every single person. The defining qualities and intensities vary. What it means to be “fixed” is different too. I mean, it’s clear that people like Miller, Noem, Trump, Vance, Leavitt – all of those dangerous, destructive, hate-filled fucks are light years beyond broken. A return to a reasonably functioning decent human state is ridiculously unlikely.
What about the rest of us? Some can be or are constantly in the process of being fixed. (me...I'm in that camp) How many of us truly stay broken forever? Being broken is just too damn boring and annoying.
Kintsugi comes to mind – the art of repairing broken pots by putting the pieces back together with lacquer mixed powdered gold, silver, or platinum.
Life is not what it's supposed to be. It's what it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.
~ Virginia Satir
I’m reminded of the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi – the acceptance of plans going awry combined with discovering the beauty of imperfection and aging (if I’m understanding it accurately). There’s a melancholic peacefulness.
And it's all right now
I learned my lesson well
See, you can't please everyone
So you got to please yourself
~ Rick Nelson, Garden Party
