Bits

Olivia Newton John was 29 years old when she starred in 1978’s Grease—a movie about high school kids. John Travolta was 23. Best friend Rizzo, played by Stockard Channing, was 34. They all looked good but definitely their age—NOT 17.

Still, I loved the flick.

Now that I’m in my 60s—much closer to the end than the beginning—73 seems like a ridiculously young age to croak.

I took out two library books which were boosted under Libby’s Funny Business header (Libby is the library app for my Kindle). I expected humor.

Humor
   noun
the quality of being amusing or comic, especially as expressed in literature or speech.

Both books, for me, were certainly witty but funny…don’t know about that.

In Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime, I got hard, painful and sometimes brutal stories of being Black and Brown during the apartheid and post apartheid years in South Africa. In Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar’s book, You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism , there are, indeed, batshit tales of casual, totally assholian, rabid weasel bigotry and discrimination.

I wasn’t unaware of the iniquitous aggressions played out by the white scum-suckers amongst us. I’d have to be blind as well as deaf AND a complete idiot to miss what’s going on. Still the relentless violations of decency, kindness and tolerance are overwhelming.

I’m reminded of when The Amazing Bob, Jen, Oni and I were house hunting. We wanted to stay in Boston. Yes, the place has its own serious probs but we felt safer living in a relatively diverse area. Before making an offer on Valhalla we took long drives up and down the streets, checking bumper stickers and yard signs for bin brains and losers.

Speaking of losers, K-Lie McNinny’s sister Ryann (what’s with the double n? Do you think that makes you sound smart ’n’ classy?) has put together a dating app for young conservatives (AKA white supremacists) called, ‘The Right Stuff.’ Self-titled “loudmouth of the internet” Jeff Tiedrich asks:

why did they call it The Right Stuff when OK Stupid was right there the whole time?
By the by, women get free “premium” accounts but men have to shell out the bucks. Uh huh. No surprise there. This is a site for incels. Who knows, one or two of those odious unfuckables MIGHT get lucky but, on the whole, this enterprise is doomed to fail. There's only so many self-hating, masochistic, idiot women on the planet and an infinite number of tiny dicked misogynists.

We tell people to follow their dreams, but you can only dream of what you can imagine, and, depending on where you come from, your imagination can be quite limited.
