I’m so reliant on tech AND my car. It’s been in the shop for couple days and was limping for a few days before that. I’ve felt stranded! This is abject silliness. I live a block and a half from a bus line (it comes every 15 minutes too), it’s a very short ride to the Red Line (subway), which can take me into downtown Boston or Harvard Square in Cambridge OR Davis Squre in Slumberville. AND it connects to the Orange, Green, Blue or Silver Lines.
I am NOT stranded AT ALL, just lazy. It’s easier to jump into Bix. I don’t have to wait on buses or trains. I can just GO. Sure, yes BUT I’m walking less and this ain’t good.
And then what happened Donna? Eh, A couple big, bad surgeries and I became, temporarily, scary tippy. I got the trike and had the epiphany that triking was WAY more fun than walking. THEN The Amazing Bob’s health shit the bed, he croaked and I lost the will to do much of anything besides feed and cosset our herd of cat.
Next, I’ll get back to taking long walks. Honestly now, I live in fucking Valhalla and Nantasket is a short 20 minute ride from here. There’s no end of gorgeous walkies to be had. Also too, pic opps!
I can start slow – be realistic and shit. If I try giant jaunts right off the bat (OR attempt to do them every single damn day) I’m gonna wear myself clean out and, most likely, hurt meself. Nae good mes amis, nae good.
Getting started and sticking with it. Not two of my natural talents.

Walking is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health. Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance. It can also reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers. Unlike some other forms of exercise, walking is free and doesn’t require any special equipment or training. (source)When we lived in Cambridge, Jen and I walked to and from work most days – a total of six miles. When we moved down here to Valhalla, I took hour+ long walks a few times a week or so.

The three primary pillars of bone health have always been a calcium-rich diet, vitamin D and weight-bearing exercise. Walking has always been considered a great option for a weight-bearing exercise. (source)I have enough wrong with me. I don’t need to add frail bones onto the pile. What to do? For starters, we’ll take public transport more often – that doesn’t necessarily involve epic amounts of walking BUT it’s more than I do now. Also too, LESS carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This would be a win/win, ya know.
