Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow this morning, presaging six more weeks of winter? Doubtful. The Weather Channel tells me it’s overcast in Punxsie. Does this mean spring will be early this year?
Unlikely.
I went to college in a town near Punxsutawney. I’ve got the real skinny. Phil is not known for his accuracy. Him coming out of his burrow is all about pomp and spectacle. I know, you’re shocked and feel horribly, despicably deceived. I understand.
Still, I hope. I wish.
Mind you, it’s not like winter has been especially hard this year though. We’ve only had a little bit of snow and it hasn’t been bitterly cold…so far. It’s been windy as hell though and that more than anything else, has kept me inside. I generally go to the Y for indoor walks—NOT as much as I should though. Why not? Walking around an indoor track is BORING. The path is three lanes (walking, passing and running) and smooth but there’s virtually nothing to look at. There are the other walkers and occasional runners—woo-hoo. There are free standing heavy bags in the track’s four corners so, sometimes, I can watch folks punching or kicking them. This is, inevitably, UNthrilling though.
This is my last month on the heinously tedious track. In March, when temps are reliably back in the 40s, I’ll be back to cruising along the seawall. Maybe I’ll even get up to Nut Island or down to Nantasket for more of a challenge.
Time to get up, suit up and hit the gym. *whine, snivel*
Is life not a thousand times too short for us to bore ourselves?

I like long walks, especially when they’re taken by people who annoy me.
~ Fred Allen
Finally, I only mention it BUT I really think that tossing and turning at night should count as exercise.
