Harvey Hypocrites

Joel Osteen’s Houston mega church can hold more than 16,000 people. It’s closed, he’s not offering shelter from the floods there. Why? He says it’s inaccessible due to severe flooding!

Snopes, the fact checking site, says that:
The church was flooded on the inside, garage level, basement level, not where the main floors are. It’s a huge place.
And then there’s Osteen’s 17,000 square foot home. There are six bedrooms, six bathrooms, three elevators and five fireplaces. The estate also boasts a one bedroom guest house and a pool house. (source) Gee, kinda seems he could share some of that monster space with folks in need. That'd be the "Christian" thing to do, no?

This, THIS right here is one of the big reason why Christians, in this country anyway, have such a bad fucking rep. Bloody nice that he and the wife are praying for all the flooded out folks though.

Yeah dude, thoughts and prayers. Have you thought about going into politics? That’s the GOP mantra, ya know.

The Science Post, by the by, snarkily tells us the latest report from the front lines of Hurricane Harvey is that just over 11,500 more thoughts and prayers are needed for the victims to be okay.

I’ve just read that this supposed man of god, this diamond studded shepherd, this big Christian leader-man, is FINALLY prepping to open up his damned church. Gee whillickers, they’ve bought air mattresses! Wonder if they’re bringing in any food, water or medicos.

Osteen claims:
We have never closed our doors. We will continue to be a distribution center for those in need. We are prepared to house people once shelters reach capacity. Lakewood will be a value to the community in the aftermath of this storm in helping our fellow citizens rebuild their lives. (source)
Hemant Mehta of Patheos wonders:
I honestly don’t get why they were prepared to house people only after “shelters reach capacity.” Why weren’t they first in line to house people, given their ample resources?
And then there’s the most hated man in Washington, Senator Ted Cruz. He famously voted against aid in the wake of Hurricane Sandy but is asking for money for Texas. Cruz, once again, has focused a mondo fat spotlight on his spectacular, obscene hypocrisy. And yes of course, he’s a big Evangelical style Christian.

Two quotes about Cruz that say it all:
During the campaign, Cruz has done everything but run ads identifying him as "The Official Candidate of the Son of God." (source)
"I probably like Ted Cruz more than most of my colleagues like Ted Cruz, and I hate Ted Cruz," Franken said on CNN's "New Day" Wednesday morning. "And I make an exception with him because he is a toxic coworker, and to get anything done in the Senate, you've got to be collegial. You're a small town of 100 people. Ted doesn't get anything done. His big accomplishment was shutting down the government.” (source)
I only mention it but:
Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
Luke 6:46

He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
Mark 7:6

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror
James 1:22-23

  1. For those of us in Houston, we also know that his church (which used to tbe arena for the Houston Rockets basketball team) is about 5 miles closer than the actual mega-shelter to the victims and flooding areas to the southwest of the city.

Downtown, where the big city shelter area is, is flooded. There have been fires. The big bayou runs near it.

Osteen's church is well outside that area. In fact, it might very well be the largest structure of that kind outside the already-flooded areas.

  2. Lately I am reminded daily, but all the moreso with our Tuesday Coffee Clatch in front of Oregon's only retard representative's office of something their precious lord and master is reputed to have said (Matt 6:5, roughly): don't be like the hypocrites who love to stand on street and be seen, they have their reward.

Dove-tails with Susie's thoughts on not physically protesting, though stems from my experience back in the day with groupies and agents provocateur, and my disdain for the yuppie duppies that were no where to be found when the rest of us were running around with our hair on fire. Protesting is counter-productive, and plays right into their hands.

Damn girl, if you could hear yourself you'd blush like a bride 😎

    1. :-) You rock! Every time I go to a protest I feel conflicted. Marching is good – it's a show of numbers but, it seems, it's more of a feel good party (or often is, particularly here in lily blue Massachusetts). Marches and rallies MUST be backed up with daily action – calls, letters, rational discussions with folks who don't agree, etc. They're not an end in themselves.

      Dammit.
