Pragmatic Woman

Pragmatic Woman – able to chill the fuck out in a single bound!
In my head this week – Cat Stevens singing Hardheaded Woman and, not so thrillingly, Please Come to Boston.

Pragmatic
adjective
1) dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations.
2) relating to philosophical or political pragmatism.

I think of myself, generally, as being a muy practical sort. I put one foot in front of the other. I'm in the moment…until I’m not. At that point, my brain soars and glides. One good part of aging, I’ve finally, succesfully leashed my impetuous, brash behaviors. The mind though, it continues to wheel through the azure limits of my bean.
From here on out, there's just reality. I think that's what maturity is: a stoic response to endless reality.
~ Carrie Fisher, Postcards from the Edge
Stoic? Yeah, I may see, grok (as much as I can) and accept (again, as much as I can) reality but, emmmm, me and stoicism ain’t on speaking terms. Never have been.
Gratuitous Skitter and Coco pics. Yur welcome.
Just drive down that road until you get blown up.
~ George S. Patton Jr.
Words to LIVE by! Wut. No?

I also have this tune in my head:
Let us be lovers, we'll marry our fortunes together
I've got some real estate here in my bag
So we bought a pack of cigarettes, and Mrs. Wagner pies
And we walked off to look for America
~~~
Laughing on the bus, playing games with the faces
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said, be careful, his bowtie is really a camera
~~~
Toss me a cigarette, I think there's one in my raincoat
We smoked the last one an hour ago
So I looked at the scenery, she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field
Back in my teens (when pterodactyls graced the skies), this song, for me, meant possibility, hope, the promise of a better tomorrow.
I wish I could take a picture of the inside of my brain right now. It’s metaphorically speaking sparking, flashing, zapping. It’s Pop Rocks and Mountain Dew time up there. In this churning sea there’s a lake of calm. Pragmatic Woman comes to my rescue.

When the heart speaks, the mind finds it indecent to object.
~ Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being

The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.
~ Plutarch

I GOTS to remember that it’s AOK to be on fire. I just need to focus the flame. Today I’ll work on my latest layout/design projects, hit the gym, paint and spend some quality time with my Zen Purr Machine.

I must have a prodigious amount of mind; it takes me as much as a week, sometimes, to make it up!
~ Mark Twain

  1. It meant so much more in 1964. Ok, '68, '72, whatevs. It doesn't translate well to the 21st century. Things were different.

    1. No, it doesn't. It brings me back to a much safer SEEMING world – one with adventure and magic. In '64 I was 6.
