This and a lot of that

Yes, Japanese dwarf flying squirrels ARE, in fact, the Baby Yodas of the animal world.

Bamboo is the future. Yes. Really. Check out this article at InsideClimateNews.org The Radical Case for Growing Huge Swaths of Bamboo in North America It’s a long read (so get a cuppa and find yourself a comfy chair) but MEGA worth it!

Instead of cutting down oak, pine, maple trees, bamboo can be used to make paper, flooring, furniture, charcoal, building materials and more.

Don’t have time to read a long column? Gotcha. Check out BambooGrove.com.

Unlike most cash crops, bamboo requires no agricultural chemicals to thrive. Unlike cotton, which is one of the most intensely sprayed crops in the world and rapidly depletes the nutrients in the soil, bamboo sequesters nitrogen and cultivation does not add chemicals to the environment. (source)

Are you, like me, frustrated because travel is, at the very least, inadvisable in these insane Republi/Fascist fueled pandemic times?

Are you, especially after last week’s Trump ignited and Republi/Fascist toadie planned   insurrection, doomscrolling WAY too goddamn much? Are you obsessively scanning the news, ya know, just like me?

Give yourself a fucking break. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is on the case.

Instead of focusing on the ultra stresstastic news sites, try this:

Visit the Rijksstudio at the Rijksmuseum’s site where you can view (AND download for free!) over 710,000 works of art.

Also check out the 2020 Rijksstudio design award show

Go to the Scottish National Gallery site Right now, amongst all their other brill pieces, they’re featuring 38 watercolors by J.M.W. Turner. (LOVE Turner!) These are only exhibited once a year, in January, in an effort to preserve their color and vibrancy. Watercolors fade, don’cha know.

The Scottish National Gallery, just FYI, is one of my all time fave museums.

Take a brief but gorgeous drone tour (via YouTube) of the Orkney Mainland and the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye. Yeah, I’m in a Scottish frame of mind this morning.

How about a drone tour of Greenland's Glaciers?

If ya abso-gotta surf the horror-show news waves, check out last night’s Shower Cap post.

From the folks who never quite managed to bring you Infrastructure Week, it’s CONSEQUENCES WEEK!
As uszh, he's snarkarifically trenchant with on-the-nose takes AND there’s some sweet schadenfreude with loads ‘o’ links to fact driven evidence sites.

Me? I'm gonna hit the rain room, put on REAL pants (versus my day pajamas) and head into MGH for a neuro follow up on my latest seizure.  FUN!

Also, today is Wednesday – YES, this is take-out and Mandalorian night. Will we get Japanese or Indian grub? Will I have wine or a hot toddy? There are SO many exhilerating, possibly life changing decisions to be made!

  1. When I was twelve, my father received orders to Japan (he was a Navy pilot). One of the most amazing things I saw while there was how instrumental bamboo was to the local economy. I was lucky enough to be invited to visit a Japanese farmer's home which was made entirely of bamboo (walls and supporting infrastructure), paper(windows), and thatching (roof). It was located in a sheltered spot, but the whole area was subject to typhoons and earthquakes, yet the farm house endured. The house wasn't new (probably built generations before), and was carefully maintained. The family grew rice for a cash crop, and had the most amazing garden. There was literally no waste, no plastic throw-a-ways, everything was recycled.
