Jingle Jangle

I dreamed that I was beginning a friendship with Rich Gilbert – the abso-fucking-astoundamento guitarist from Human Sexual Response, The Zulus, Concussion Ensemble, etc. There was a potential friends with benefits vibe goin' on too. Cool.

I wonder what brought this around in my scattered bean. Maybe it’s the whole non-functioning audio system, the lack of music? This lockdown would be a shit-ton more bearable if I could dance this mess around to Land of the Glass Pinecones or ANYTHING by Concussion Ensemble – dunno what tune they’re rockin’ on that vid BUT their absolute killer rendition of the Mission Impossible theme song is cueing up on the internal turntable right now.

Reading around the ‘toobz (in an attempt to recapture some shred of the C.E. sound) I came across this fab AND hilarious interview with Mister Gilbert by John Dzenitis, a staff writer, back in the day, at the MIT humor ‘zine Voo Doo.

TOTES worth the click over and read!

Concussion Ensemble’s sound has been called Math Rock and post-rock. ‘the fuck is that?
Math Rock is a relation to post-rock, a better known indie-rock style that shares similar aesthetics. Where post-rock has distinct jazz influences, math rock is the opposite side of the same coin -- it's dense and complex, filled with difficult time signatures and intertwining phrases. (source)
a guitar riff may repeat a sequence of five quarter-notes over 4/4 time signature, thus giving the listener an overall feeling of chaos, in spite of the riffs rigid structure. (source)
Ooookay. All I can say is that my current sad is amped up by their absence. The Zulus, Gilbert’s pre C.E. and much more traditional indie rock band, will be having a reunion show at The Paradise on September 4rth (plague permitting). If Ten is back from way out west by then, mebbe we can go. I betcha I could feel the live tune-age.

Imma zip out for a walk now. I’ve taken a few days off from walkies and physical therapy exercises. Naturally, I’m feeling all hideously guilty about this. Granted, I was housecleaning/organizing and that SO counts as exercise BUT it ain’t the same. While it’s good and satisfying to have a tidy home, a thorough workout is what lifts and smooths my jangled nerves.

  1. I've been pondering your yearning for tunes. I wonder if "bone conducting headphones" would be helpful? I think I remember that your auditory nerve is toast so maybe not. But if the volume was loud, could you feel the vibrations in your skull?
