Why I don’t rent summer get aways anymore.
I’ve done this twice in my long years and twice only. Warum? The first time, I was in my mid-late 20s (I think) and could barely afford this very nice cottage on Martha’s Vineyard. It was a good two miles from a GLORIOUS beach. I was young though, two miles was nothin'.'
BUT, it rained every single day but one. Yeah there were breaks in the deluge but not enough to trek to the beach and enjoy a good swim or lay out watching the waves roll in.
What’d we do? Drove around, exploring the islands little towns, shopped (not that I had the greenbacks for that), played board games and argued – too damn many people in too small a place.
The
second time I rented a "beach" house it was mid-Cape. I went with a
friend and her family (young children! NOT relaxing.). The house was
fine, it only rained one day out of seven but the ‘beach’ was mega
distant and ridiculously small. Definitely not the sort with waves, much
sand or waves, let alone shells. We had to drive quite a distance to
have a decent beach day.
Now, In the easy google era, I can do a much better job of finding a cottage within easy walking distance of a good-ish beach.
The
only problem that remains is the weather. To get a reasonably priced,
decent location rental, you need to book WAY in advance. March, maybe
earlier and, at that, you have to know someone. I dunno, maybe Airbnb
has changed all that?
Here at home I can just walk down the
street to the big beach OR I can motor off to Nantasket. If I go in the
wee morning hours, it’s not yet packed. I can stake out my territory –
put up an umbrella, a comfy beach bed, a collection of books and a cooler
full of water and fruit.
Yeah, that’s the ticket
Why does
this come up today? I just checked the forecast for the weekend and next
week. I feel terribly sorry for anyone who booked a Cape or Vineyard
vaca.
