Today is Saturnalia, the original Christmas. Saturnalia was a Roman festival celebrated for one day to two weeks in mid-December. It was a farmer's celebration to mark the end of the autumn planting season and honor the god of agriculture, Saturn. Io Saturnalia is the traditional greeting. I'm simply ALL about tradition.
When the Roman calendar changed, the main feast was held around the 25th of December. People exchanged presents and decorated their homes with wreaths. (source)
Wax taper candles called cerei were common gifts during Saturnalia, to signify light returning after the solstice. (source)The winter solstice is next Wednesday the 21st. That's also the day that I spend two+ hours in the MRI JUST FOR MY SPINE. I get my brain imaged the week after Christmas. Do I know how to Saturnalia right or what?!
Today, here in Valhalla, we’re having another round of wind gusts strong enough to make our coyote residents go airborne. The rain’s so heavy, the fish might drown. Seagulls are knocking on the door asking to come in so they can warm up and dry off. Yeah, I won’t be braving the seawall for a walk primarily because I don’t have a goddamn death wish. Other reasons? Ten and Jen won’t allow it. Sure, normally when I’m told I can’t do something, I’ll get pissed off, say “oh yes I can—you just watch.” In this case no—I’m just not sufficiently insane.
Shocking, I know.
