What happens when I wake in the middle of the night?

G
It might be safer for me to raid the fridge—go all Snack City on the leftovers of that amazing Oni crafted 'za (YUM!). After all, I could burn off the calories in an after dawn trike ride, right? Makes sense, eh?

Nope, in a fit of dietary self control, I didn't indulge in a tiny meal. Instead I fired up the intertoobz and read the news. This is, generally speaking, not a sleep inducer—more of a rage sparker.

Fer instance, in the last 48 hours alone, since I last posted stats, 33 more Americans have been murdered by gun wielding assholes. An additional 82 have been injured.

In Tuscon, Arizona yesterday:
An alleged shoplifting incident turned violent when the suspect was shot by a bystander in midtown.  The incident happened near Grant and Oracle around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tucson Police say they got a call that a man was stealing beers from the Circle K.  Investigators say a man on a bike followed the suspect and shot him near the Burger King after the suspect allegedly lifted a large piece of wood in a threatening manner.

The alleged shoplifter was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.  It's unclear whether the shooter will face any charges.
Apparently this good-guy-with-a-gun feels that the crime of stealing beer is deserving of an immediate death sentence. He felt threatened by a piece of wood, you say? How do you think the alleged shoplifter felt while having a gun pointed at him?

And in Neenah, Wisconsin, at least one person is dead after a stand off at a motorcycle store.

The New York Times published a fabulous editorial on their front on Saturday.
The attention and anger of Americans should also be directed at the elected leaders whose job is to keep us safe but who place a higher premium on the money and political power of an industry dedicated to profiting from the unfettered spread of ever more powerful firearms.
YES! More and better gun regulations sounds like an obvious political winner, right? And yet...
All four GOP senators running for president vote against extending FBI checks to every firearm sold and banning sale to individuals on terror watchlists
A day after 14 people were killed in the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, all four Republican presidential candidates in the US Senate – Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, Rand Paul and Marco Rubio – opposed a measure that would introduce tighter gun laws.
You’d think, wouldn’t ya, that the officials who’ve been elected to serve the public—all of us, not just the NRA-Americans—would care, would want to do something about this. If another country's citizens were killing us at the rate that our own countrymen are, we'd be at war already.

For Republicans, apparently, the murders and maimings only count if the shooter(s) is brown and, preferably, Muslim.

The prez of that christianist indoctrination center (AKA Liberty University) is now doing a Carly Fiorina.
"I always thought that if more good people had concealed-carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walk in and kill," he said.
Yup, he’s encouraging his crew of brainwashed young adults to commit mass murder. How Christ-like of him, no? Oh, by the by, it seems this squirrel brained NRA puppet missed all the memos, (ya know, the one that sited all the reputable studies) about how mores guns equal more crimes, more death, more injuries.

So then, you can see why I couldn't get back to sleep, eh?
