The Druid in Cambridge – my favorite |
In 1995, the Supremes, in Hurley v. Irish-American Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Group of Boston, Inc. ruled in favor of of the bigoted South Boston Allied War Veterans Council.
A unanimous court held that the State Court's ruling to require private citizens who organize a parade to include a group expressing a message that the organizers do not wish to convey violates the First Amendment by making private speech subordinate to the public accommodation requirement. Such an action "violate[s] the fundamental First Amendment rule that a speaker has the autonomy to choose the content of his own message and, conversely, to decide what not to say."Understood but still, a pile of antediluvian, whiny-ass Rancor shit. The bigots won in court but they, ultimately, LOST. Evolution happens don'cha know.

Pretty if it wasn't so scary |
The Y going dark – I get it. This is where my physical therapy happens though. Two months post-surgery my struggle to regain strength and mobility continues. I can do exercises here at home and take walks along the seawall. Ten’s gonna look into turning my recumbent trike into a stationary recumbant trike. I guess the only thing I’m missing are the weight machines.
*sigh* Shit’s gotten way too fucking real.
The Dropkick Murphys will still do their annual show but it’ll be live-streamed (and FREE) sans audience from the House of Blues. Embarrassingly, because they're hometown boys AND, back in my hearing days, I was real keen on Celtic Rock and Punk (Black 47, The Pogues, Runrig, etc., etc.), I’ve never heard DKM play. Maybe, if I turn the sound WAY up on my laptop, I’ll be able to feel their tunes?
Will there be other folks rockin’ the uilleann pipes and bodhrán anywhere? At home, for tiny audiences, maybe,
An aside: I’ve been told, by a few Irish musicians no less, that bodhrán rhymes with moron, This proves my postulate that drummers get no respect anywhere. My first trip to Ireland, unsurprisingly, springs to mind today. After a few days hangin’ in Eyre Square, smokin’ ciggies with randos and quaffing Stout in Galway’s divier bars, I took off for a couple of magical and unforgettable days on Inis Mór. That was, mebbe, 25 or so years ago. I wonder how much has changed – has Inis Mór undergone Disneyfication yet?
Every good thing eventually does, right? Life – sanitized for our protection and shit.
I hear you. We have enough food to get by and I can work at home. I just set up a nifty work station in Liran's old room with a bouncy ball seat and a side table for tea. But it's a killah that I can't get to the library or the Y. No books or spinning bike? Feh! It's gonna be chilly this week too, so I can't get out for a ride. My buds are all social distancing and I'd even feel guilty going to Quincy for dinner. Neighborhood walkies it is, then. And Guinness. Sláinte!
ReplyDeleteI feel like such a baby for not wanting to take a walk today. Honestly, it's 37º here and only a little rainy. I'll do lots of my PT exercises and then treat myself with a wee dram this evening :-)
DeleteWe're hunkered down, with enough of everything for a couple of weeks. We can shelter in place for a good long time.
ReplyDeleteMy big concern now is, predictably, the money. We can isolate & help keep our community safe; but how will we pay our bills if we can't work? I'm trying hard to trust that someone in charge is thinking of solutions for this, but yesterday trump just casually mentioned that the crisis may last into AUGUST - with no reassurance that there will be programs or relief, no acknowledgement that most of us can't afford to just not have any income for four or five months!
Ugh, sorry to freak out all over your comments...
Idiot and communication-challenged cretin that he is, the bumbling Orange Menace misspoke. From The Hill:
Delete"Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, clarified after Trump’s remarks that the guidelines would not necessarily last until the summer months but rather that timeline was one potential trajectory of the coronavirus outbreak.
“The guidelines are a 15 day trial guideline...What the president was saying is that the trajectory of the outbreak may go until then.”"
The Bangor Daily News sez:
"Internet, wireless, cable, water and other companies say they are suspending shutoffs for nonpayment during the coronavirus outbreak, with some adding extra services to help Mainers get by." https://bangordailynews.com/2020/03/14/business/internet-cable-companies-wont-shut-off-service-to-those-who-cant-pay-during-outbreak/
I can't find anything (so far) about food and meds though.
NO worries re: freaking and comments – we're going through some scary-ass times!
